During our 62 years the Myakka Chapter of the NSDAR has held true to our founders’ vision through providing programs and funding to organizations and individuals who foster environmental conservation, historical preservation, education and national defense. Our members work hard presenting programs and organizing fundraising events to assure that our mission is realized.
We support NSDAR and FSSDAR projects, purchase wreaths for our veterans buried in national cemeteries and attend funerals at the Sarasota National Cemetery to assure that all of our veterans are buried with dignity. We plant trees, hold beach, park and road clean-up events, attend dedications of national historic monuments, the list goes on and on.
We also provide scholarships and awards to outstanding students through our JROTC Award program and the Historical Essay program for younger students and the DAR Good Citizens Award for a senior in one of the local high schools. We support our local public library by presenting programs on American history and providing books in memory of deceased members.
At each general membership meeting, we collect non-perishable food for the local food bank, BoxTops for Education and pull-tabs to support the “Paws for Patriots” program. We also collect items for the Crossnore School Bird Cage.
Our fundraising activities range from our used book sale at general meetings to silent auctions, fashion shows and special luncheons honoring community members and organizations.
